Sonja Richards was born in Calgary and raised in Turner Valley, Alberta. Sonja attended the University of Lethbridge where she took a keen interest in the development of the brain and its relation to behavior. Her interests and studies led her to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the U of L.
She met and married her husband while at the U of L. They now live in Cardston, Alberta with their three children.
In 2003, Sonja joined the Parents As Teachers program as a Parent Educator; her education and involvement in the PAT program made her a natural choice to facilitate the new Stay and Play Program when it was started in Cardston. The program grew under her care and evolved to become a part of a new Parent Link Center in Cardston. Her involvement in these led her into the Family Oriented Planning Sessions program for the Westwind School Division. The program supports parents of children age 3 to 5 who have extra needs. She has been instrumental in the program’s success in the area.
Sonja has overcome extreme depression in the past and is very committed to her mental wellness, incorporating numerous healthy choices into her life. She is devoted to helping those with mental illness and looks forward to helping them find Shinah House.
